SIU SDM Golf Tournament Proceeds Reaches a Milestone
The 2014 SIU SDM/Mac McKenzie Prophy Cup Challenge Golf Tournament enjoyed a field of many familiar faces and past tournament champions; participants enjoyed additional contests during the tournament; and the cause of the day - faculty recruitment and retention at SIU SDM - passed another milestone.
"We are excited to announce that proceeds from the Prophy Cup Challenge in recent years have allowed us to grow an endowment fund that now totals nearly a quarter of a million dollars," said Dr. Rotter.
Nicholas Varney, a second year student from Springfield, earned the Irwin Robinson Research Award worth $500 from the Odontographic Society of Chicago Research and Education Foundation. The award celebrates the work of a student investigator in a scientific project related to dentistry and other health sciences.
Varney's research presentation is, "Expression of Mas-Related Gene (MRG) Receptors in Human Dental Pulp." He has been working on a research project for two years in the lab of Dr. Medha Gautam, associate professor of pharmacology. He has been performing experiments to determine the identity and distribution of a new class of pain modulating receptors in dental pulp.
Five new members were inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), Nu Xi Chapter at the SIU SDM on April 30. The induction of the Class of 2014 Alumni Members included Ryan Beelman, Eric Castle, Lindsey Mason, Leah Rippy, and Maggie Schaefer.

Great Teacher Award
Applications for the 2014 Great Teacher Award are now being accepted. The Great Teacher Award was established in 1970 by the SIUE Alumni Association.
Each year, an SIUE faculty member is recognized for their continuous excellence in teaching. Each recipient receives a $1,000 award and a commemorative plaque. In addition, each recipient's name is engraved on the Great Teacher Award plaque displayed at Birger Hall. The award is presented during the December commencement.
SIUE offers a variety of summer camps full of learning and fun for kids. Campers can choose from academic camps in science, Spanish, theater and dance, writing, or sports camps in men's and women's soccer, softball, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, and strength and conditioning. Campers are grouped by age and experience.
